Proveedor de agua en las ciudades del Chile Colonial. Extraía el agua de los ríos o de pozos, depositándola en barriles y transpotándola después, generalmente sobre mulas.
Al iniciarse las primeras campañas de la Patria Vieja, muchos "aguateros" se pusieron al servicio de la causa patriótica, solidarizando con el abastecimiento de agua para las tropas.
