the trees don their ember caps
and the sky, its cloak of soft smoke.
A little snow plays hide-and-seek
with the blond grass of memory.
The houses in the distance huddle together,
like chilly children behind the windowpane of the world.
And the wind passes—
an old friend in a blue coat—
it hums in a low voice
a farewell song,
a song of hope,
that of the days still sleeping
in the pocket of spring.
