The Distance Between Us
This contemporary figurative painting explores boundaries, resistance and the instinctive human need to protect oneself from the outside world.
A solitary female figure confronts the viewer directly, her hands raised between herself and the observer. The open palms become the central visual and psychological element of the composition: they simultaneously communicate stop, distance, defence and vulnerability. Rather than turning away, the figure looks directly outward, transforming the gesture into an active assertion of personal boundaries.
The work is executed in acrylic with pronounced impasto, creating a dense, tactile and sculptural surface. Thick layers of paint, scraped passages and raised marks extend throughout the background, producing an energetic field of deep green, turquoise, blue and grey. The figure emerges from this turbulent environment while remaining visually connected to it.
The hands are deliberately brought forward and treated with intense colour. Warm reds, oranges, violets and yellows contrast with the predominantly cold surroundings, making them the emotional and compositional focal point. Their physical proximity to the viewer creates a sense of confrontation while also revealing the fragility of the person behind the defensive gesture.
Fine golden lines move through the textured background like cracks or traces, introducing another layer of meaning: boundaries can be protective, but they can also reveal where something has been under pressure.
The impasto is an essential part of the work’s language. The accumulated layers of material create a surface that feels almost like a psychological landscape, where tension, resistance and vulnerability become physical.
The painting ultimately asks a simple question: how close can another person come before protection becomes necessary?
