BIOGRAPHY OF ANGEL J. SALAZAR

Angel J. Salazar

Contemporary artist exploring light, perception and power—revealing how surfaces, forms and technologies shape the way we see the world.

Angel J. Salazar is an artist and author, whose practice explores light, perception, perspective, and the ways in which human experience is shaped by what we see—and what remains hidden.

The Language of Light series is an exploration of luminosity, translucency, perception and the transformation of familiar forms. The Language of Light series uses graphite and charcoal to examine the relationship between light, surface, transparency and form. Drawing on subjects ranging from the crystalline form of a crystal horse and translucent seahorses to the reflective surface of a balloon dog, the artist transforms familiar forms into meditations on luminosity, materiality and perception.

The artist’s wider practice extends into imagined architectural and technological landscapes, where light and perspective become ways of exploring visibility, power and the structures that shape contemporary life. His artistic influences include Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and M. C. Escher, alongside his scholarly engagement with technology, innovation and the political economy of digital power. Across both his writing and art, Angel J. Salazar is interested in how systems of representation—whether visual, architectural or technological—shape what we perceive and how we understand the world.

His most recent series, The Attention Labyrinth, turns towards the architecture of attention in an increasingly digital world. Drawing on labyrinthine forms, tentacular structures and the figure of the screen, the works explore how technology competes for human attention, shaping perception, behaviour and the boundaries of individual agency. The Architecture of Nowhere artwork in this series represents an explicitly conceptual and political direction, addressing technological systems, the construction of the future and the illusion of inevitable progress.

Where Language of Light series asks how light determines what we see, The Attention Labyrinth series asks who—or what—determines where we look.
