Fue una vía de comunicación entre Gipuzkoa y Navarra. Por la orilla del río discurrió entre 1914 y 1953 el ferrocarril del Plazaola, que enlazaba Pamplona/Iruña y Donostia-San Sebastián.
Dada la complicación de su estructura topográfica tuvieron que excavarse aproximadamente treinta túneles.
La figura humana en el valle del Leizarán data desde la Prehistoria destacando la presencia de dólmenes, túmulos, monolitos y cromlech.
