La cultura griega clásica explicaba todas las enfermedades y los cambios de temperamento o "humor" a partir de la influencia de cuatro líquidos corporales denominados "humores": la sangre, la flema, la bilis negra y la bilis amarilla.
Según esta teoría de los cuatro humores propuesta por Hipócrates un exceso de sangre provocaba comportamientos hiperactivos (maníacos, en la terminología actual), mientras que el exceso de bilis negra provocaba un comportamiento abatido, apático y un manifiesto sentimiento de tristeza.2 El término "bilis negra" pasó a convertirse en sinónimo de tristeza.
