La la leyenda nos cuenta que está poblado por dragones, sirenas, monstruos que devoran a los navegantes y marinos, antropófagos, pigmeos, hombres cíclopes, descabezados, cinocéfalos, islas míticas, animales fantásticos. Sin embargo, en el fondo de toda esa imaginería popular, se hallaba un desierto de soledad y silencio.
