Guadalest, Alicante

Part of the Landscapes of the Valencian Mediterranean series, this work—executed in oil on canvas-textured paper mounted on a wooden frame (18 x 14 cm)—is a captivating depiction of one of the most unique and picturesque sites in the Alicante region: the historic defensive complex of El Castell de Guadalest.

Despite its compact format, the piece stands out for its remarkable sense of monumentality and meticulous study of color:





Foreground: A lush mass of vegetation in intense lime and olive green tones occupies the lower section, acting as a fresh, natural frame that draws the viewer's gaze upward toward the crag.



Middle ground and fortified complex: The iconic white bell tower stands out against the rugged rock formation, perched atop the mountain ridge. The artist renders the facets of the rock using clean shadows in shades of violet, blue, and brown, creating a striking contrast with the building's whitewashed walls. A winding band of scrub in vibrant golden-yellow runs up the rising slope, adding warmth and compositional dynamism.



Background and hillside: At the highest point of the rocky outcrop stands the ancient masonry defensive tower; its warm-toned mass is silhouetted against the gentle green slope of the distant mountain range, all bathed in the clear, luminous light of the Mediterranean interior.

The use of oil paint on canvas-textured paper allows for precise, textured brushwork that masterfully captures the solidity of the stone, the warmth of the whitewash, and the freshness of the Levantine vegetation. In the bottom left corner, the signature "Penya-Roja" completes the work, set against the dense greenery of the foreground.
