María, oriunda de Magdala, ciudad próspera con puerto en el mar de Galilea, de familia acomodada, culta, líder, la preferida del Maestro. Junto con otras mujeres también pudientes, financió actividades de Jesús y sus apóstoles. En el siglo VI el Papa Gregorio la tildó de prostituta para desprestigiarla, tales eran los celos que despertaba la potencia de su figura, que veían como una amenaza para la prevalencia del varón en el imaginario católico.
