Abstracted Face
Abstracted Face is an exploration of identity through the gradual transformation of the human face. Gela Mikava treats the face not as a conventional portrait, but as a fragile psychological and visual territory where memory, emotion, gesture, and identity overlap.
The recognizable face is repeatedly fragmented, obscured, distorted, or partially erased. What remains is not necessarily the image of a particular person, but a trace of presence — something caught between recognition and disappearance. In this process, the face becomes less a representation of an individual and more a symbol of the unstable nature of identity itself.
Mikava’s expressive gestures and layered surfaces create a tension between revelation and concealment. Some forms appear to emerge from the painting while others seem to dissolve back into it, suggesting that identity is never entirely fixed or complete. The face becomes a place where the visible and invisible coexist.
The series questions what remains of a person when the recognizable features are removed. Is identity contained in the face, in memory, in gesture, or in the traces left behind?
Through abstraction, distortion, and material gesture, Abstracted Face moves beyond portraiture toward a more universal investigation of presence, absence, memory, and the fragile construction of the self.
