The royal banquet

A scene that combines the tradition of still life with a critical perspective on our relationship with animals and consumption. The pig, dressed as the centrepiece of a banquet, occupies the centre of a composition in which the abundance of fruit, flowers and birds contrasts with the unease aroused by its presence. The work plays with irony and the conventions of classical painting to question the boundaries between celebration and sacrifice, beauty and violence, food and living beings.
