The human body as an architecture of thought. That's the proposal of painter David Agenjo (Madrid, 1977), whose nudes express the complexity of feelings and emotions: the fragility of the human condition, seemingly strong, but only seemingly.
Agenjo has painted since childhood, out of a need to represent what he sees and what he feels, as he has said on occasion. He mostly uses acrylics, but he adds all kinds of materials to the canvas: mesh tape, plastic bags, fibreglass… to create that organic texture that characterises his paintings.
The bodies he paints are contorted into tense positions, a device that lets him express emotions through an anatomy so realistic that you can make out the veins under the skin.
His figures are covered in scales of colour, like the clothes we use to show our own identity. Although also to hide it. Like costumes or suits of armour.
Agenjo strips his models of anything anecdotal. Their faces and their hands, braided like climbing vines, become metaphors for the fears and desires that weave together our inner lives.
He paints in bright, cheerful tones, in a palette that acts as the starting point for the previous artwork. He even uses the canvases he mixes his colours on as the base for his next piece of work. The notion of the organic in the serialisation of artistic production too.
Agenjo lives in London, where he has exhibited his artwork many times. Also in places like Dubai and New York. After starting out in graphic design, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting, in a style that has been described as modern impressionism. At moments it recalls the Bacon who let his oils slide down the canvas in vertical streams of paint. Tears from that sensitive interior, which Agenjo also recognises in human beings.
