We live in a society where everything happens at lightning speed. You blink and you've already missed something. Or so the prophets of immediacy preach. We're constantly pushed to act without even having time to think about the best way to do it. Introspection isn't a value on the rise these days, unless it's virtual. That's why, because it's almost an act of resistance, Pedro Fausto Rodríguez's work feels so appealing.
He paints women absorbed in delicate everyday acts that belong to their private world. Intimist realism has always granted women the privilege of losing themselves in thought, something this artist raises higher through an enveloping light: it envelops the viewer too, drawing them emotionally into the scene.
He makes you feel, just as the models feel, the inner state of peace that comes from stopping to appreciate the beauty of nature, letting yourself be carried away by a good book, looking quietly out of the window or playing the ukulele, like a modern Holly Golightly.
What stands out in this painter is his handling of light effects, with which he gives his paintings an atmosphere that is both hazy and tangible. With a photographer's precision he captures the fleeting magic of an instant that will never repeat itself and sets it down on canvas or panel, chiefly through light and its variations, pushing the result further with a fantasy of technical resources, from a kind of pointillism to scraping with a palette knife, with which he mimics the furrows that life leaves on skin as it is lived.
