Sol Sánchez. The inevitable question

Since the dawn of humanity, human beings have asked themselves about the meaning of life. The craving for transcendental knowledge is built into our species. The Universe is the great unknown. We only know a small fraction of the whole of it, and the part in shadow pulls at us powerfully.

Artist Sol Sánchez (Cáceres, 1956) works in search of that mystery. Her painting, which falls within abstract expressionism, questions the viewer, it wants to make them think about that mystery art has probed so much. Especially when the artist leaves figurative forms behind to enter the territory of abstraction, which tends to overlap with that of spirituality. And that has been Sánchez's route, making her painting explode across the canvas or the board, in a heightened informalism of great material density.

Knotty splashes cross the surface like arteries under tension, achieved by the artist by spreading acrylic with a palette knife. It isn't a comfortable artwork, it demands a reaction from the viewer. Anything, as long as they don't stand unmoved in front of the painting. Reddish, blue and purple colours abound, along with greener and more toasted ranges, like those of nature, a frequent motif in her abstraction. There are often veiled presences, noticeable in the artworks that keep closer contact with the more tangible reality of a landscape, for example.

Sánchez is the founder and president of the non-profit association The Cavern Art, whose aim is to support, promote and spread multidisciplinary contemporary art through organising exhibitions.

She has exhibited personally in various spaces, such as the Centro Cultural Las Claras in Plasencia, the Museo Pérez Comendador-Leroux in Hervás (Cáceres) and the Galería Geraldes da Silva in Porto (Portugal). She has also taken part in the Outono Fotográfico 08 competition in Ourense, since another side of her tireless creativity is digital photography.
