Artwork details
The oil painting shows an impressive depiction of a striking rock formation in Monument Valley. In the centre of the picture is a massive, columnar rock with steep, weathered flanks. Its ochre and brown tones contrast strongly with the vivid, turquoise-blue sky. Light, white clouds hover on the horizon and lend depth to the scene. The surrounding landscape is depicted as barren and dry, with various shades of brown and gold conveying the rough texture of the desert floor. There are hints of other rock formations in the background, emphasising the vastness of the landscape. The painting style is realistic, with carefully placed brushstrokes that capture the rough texture of the rock and the gentle transitions of the sky. The warm light that illuminates the scene suggests a late afternoon or early evening.
