Este cuadro representa un mar embravecido bajo un cielo tormentoso. Las pinceladas gruesas y cargadas de textura transmiten el movimiento incesante de las olas, que se levantan con fuerza y se mezclan en un torbellino de azules, grises, blancos y verdes. El horizonte divide la escena en dos: arriba, un cielo denso y cargado de nubes; abajo, un océano agitado que parece no tener descanso.
El uso de la materia pictórica da la sensación de rugosidad y dinamismo, como si el espectador pudiera sentir la espuma salada y la violencia del viento. Se percibe tanto la energía desbordante del mar como la atmósfera pesada de la tormenta.
