From my ongoing Blue Series, Apnea captures the moment of suspension between the deep and the surface.
A female figure floats in a vortex of dark, textured blue. Her ankle is still bound by a rusted chain to the bottom, yet her entire body arches upward, reaching for the light. A thin trail of bubbles escapes - the last breath turned into a prayer.
The painting is about resilience. It’s that universal moment when you feel anchored, out of air, and you choose to spend your very last drop of energy not to fight the water, but to point toward where you want to go.
I painted this work in acrylic with heavy impasto, using a palette knife to give the water physical weight. The thick, sculptural layers of paint make the water feel dense and heavy, while the central light breaks through the texture. It is a deeply tactile painting that needs to be seen up close to feel its depth.
A powerful statement piece for a contemporary collection, a modern living space, or a creative office.
Original painting, signed SP on the front. Certificate of Authenticity included.
