Artwork description

This contemporary figurative painting explores vulnerability, self-protection and the instinctive human need to withdraw into oneself.

A solitary female figure is portrayed in a closed, protective posture, embracing her own body while turning her gaze away from the viewer. Her crossed legs and arms create a compact, almost circular form, suggesting both physical protection and emotional isolation. The gesture of holding herself becomes a visual metaphor for seeking safety within one’s own body when the surrounding world feels uncertain or overwhelming.

The work is executed in acrylic with pronounced impasto, creating a highly tactile, sculptural surface. Thick layers of paint build the figure and the surrounding space through visible ridges, scraped passages and expressive brushwork. The impasto is especially active in the background, where deep turquoise, blue, green and graphite tones form a turbulent field that appears to surround and partially absorb the figure.

The contrast between the restrained posture of the woman and the energetic surface around her creates the central tension of the painting. Warm earthy and reddish tones emerge on the hands and feet, providing subtle points of human warmth against the predominantly cold environment.

The textured surface is an essential part of the meaning rather than merely a decorative technique. The physical density of the paint echoes the psychological density of the subject, while the fragmented marks suggest memory, tension and an unstable emotional landscape.

The result is a contemporary figurative work about self-protection, vulnerability and the space between isolation and the desire for connection.
