MAGNETISM I
Artwork details
MAGNETISM I is part of Rafa Torregrosa's painting series El misterio de los colores (The Mystery of Colours).
The composition unfolds across two large fields of blue in different shades.
As the paint dried, the canvas spontaneously developed a series of folds, which the artist decided to incorporate into the composition by highlighting them with orange strokes.
A circular yellow explosion was subsequently introduced, creating a sense of movement across both blue fields. Its rays cross the boundary between them, undergoing a transformation in colour and form as they encounter the orange lines.
At certain points of contact, small white sparks have been deliberately added to emphasise these encounters.
The composition evokes phenomena associated with energy, magnetism and neural connections, while retaining its abstract character.
MAGNETISM I explores the relationship between the spontaneous behaviour of the canvas and the artist's deliberate pictorial decisions, placing colour and its transformation at the heart of the painting.
One distinctive feature of his work is the use of large sheets of raw cotton canvas, without stretcher frames. The flexibility of the fabric allows folds, wrinkles and raised textures to develop. These irregularities can be deliberately incorporated into the composition through colour, turning the canvas itself into an active element of the painting. The surface is therefore no longer necessarily a uniform plane, but acquires a physical and textural dimension.
