I didn't choose art, it chose me. I studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, and I've tried to stay immersed in it as a kind of levitation that lets me pull away from the real world.
When and why did you start painting?
Impossible to remember, because I always drew and painted.
How do you think a gallery and its artists should help each other?
The gallery only interests me in the sense that it lets me carry on doing what I love most. It lets me show myself. Doing an interview seems like a good help to me.
What advice would you give to artists who are starting to show their artwork?
To be honest with themselves so they can be honest with everyone else, that whatever they paint should be a deep vomit. To live without limits.
How did you sell your first artwork? Is there one you feel a stronger connection with?
I've never given much importance to selling, I don't remember. Yes, there's one that's maybe my deepest confession, a mystical result that came out of an ideal state of consciousness.
What is art for you? What part does it play in your life? Do you make a living from art?
A way of life, it's the main axis along with love in its different forms. I couldn't say that everything I paint is art. And nor is everything I sell, much to my regret.
What are your sources of inspiration? Do you identify with any other artist?
Books, dance, cinema, theatre, a new person you meet, watching my daughter dance, anything that punches me in the stomach. I don't identify with him but I adore him, Dalí without a doubt.
What is it about your creative process that makes it special?
I don't feel I do anything special. I usually work with music on, that really is essential. I draw on top of the music.
Have you had an exhibition recently, what can you tell us? Do you have any project in mind?
Lately I don't do exhibitions since it isn't very rewarding, I leave paintings in restaurants whose atmosphere I like and I use social media to show myself. I have a project but it's secret, absolutely unconfessable.
Could you recommend us:
An artist: I'd recommend the work of the poet of cinema Andrei Tarkosvski.
An artwork: La vida de Dalí o Lorca.
A book: The Diary of Anaís Nin.
A film: Wuthering Heights, the version with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes.
Thank you very much.
We invite you to visit Bet Calderer's gallery on Artelista.
