From my studio: Miguel Robledo Cimbrón

From my studio: Miguel Robledo Cimbrón

I was born in Mora de Rubielos (Teruel) in 1956 into a humble family. My father Augusto worked as a resin tapper and forest ranger, my mother Juana was a housewife and farmworker. Once the resin season was over, and after I was born in that charming village during their stay there, my parents and my brothers, Ángel and Pedro, went back home to the town of Mombeltrán (Ávila), in the Tiétar Valley, in the shadow of the towering Sierra de Gredos. In 1964 we travelled to Barcelona to start a new chapter in our lives.

When and why did you start painting?

After we settled in Barcelona I started the short course of studies I did at the Academia Salleras, where my excellent marks in drawing and painting confirmed that painting was my passion and my vocation, until in 1970 I went out to work to help my family, though I never stopped painting.

How do you think a gallery and its artists should help each other?

I think with a lot of commitment and seriousness on both sides, each one knowing what their job is.

What advice would you give to artists who are starting to show their work?

Always keep your enthusiasm as high as possible and throw yourself into working, so that every time you exhibit it feels like the first time.

How did you sell your first artwork? Is there one you feel a stronger connection with?

Before I moved towards abstract art, my beginnings were oil landscapes and compositions. My first artwork was bought by a workmate of my wife's. It was a landscape I sold in the mid 80s. My connection with my artworks and how much I value them is total, considering it's something you create yourself.

What is art for you? What part does it play in your life? Do you make a living from art?

For me art is the artistic search for the ability to convey the magic of a language on the canvas. For me it plays a very rewarding part, doing what I always wanted to do day in and day out: paint. I don't make a living from art, but sales are a bit of extra help.

What are your sources of inspiration? Do you identify with any other artist?

Both my inspiration and my influences lie in Art Informel, letting chance take you to putting on the canvas whatever is flowing through you at that moment, with a sense of indifference. As for influential artists, the ones who use matter and colour in their work (Asger Jorn, Bram van Velde, Tàpies, Miralles, etc.).

What makes your creative process special?

It would be my motivation to create life in my artworks, both visual and emotional. I also listen to Kitaro while I paint.

Have you had any exhibitions lately, what can you tell us about them? Do you have any project in mind?

In 2015 I had four exhibitions, three in Barcelona and one in Paris. In 2016 I have one in Dallas (Texas), one in Madrid and shortly another one in Porto (Portugal). Among my projects is to keep painting so I can keep exhibiting, so that everyone who wants to see my artworks can do so, without having to buy anything.
