ABYSSAL TREASURE
Artwork details
A Relic of the Ocean. A Guardian of Ancestral Memory.
This artwork emerges from the fusion of sculpture, painting and artistic ornamentation applied to an animal skull recovered from nature, transforming it into a unique piece that celebrates the beauty of organic forms and the possibility of rebirth through art.
Inspired by the immensity of the ocean and the treasures hidden within its depths, the piece evokes a mysterious world where matter, colour and symbolism merge to create a totemic object of striking presence, conceived as a sculptural centrepiece for contemplation and character.
In symbolic traditions, the horse represents freedom, vital force, nobility and an untamed spirit. Associated with movement, endurance and the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds, it becomes an emblem of protection, transformation and energy in this work. Its presence invites us to reconnect with nature, honour the animal's memory and contemplate the beauty that remains beyond life.
Since ancient times, animal bones and skulls have formed part of the ritual, symbolic and decorative expressions of different cultures. In this artwork, that heritage is reinterpreted through a contemporary perspective: the skull becomes an object of contemplation, an artistic totem that evokes the protection of the home, respect for nature and the ancestral bond between humankind and the animal world.
Composition and Materials
The artwork is created on a Spanish horse skull, sealed with white clay and hand-painted in oil using a palette of deep blues, turquoise, ocean greens and mineral tones. Layers of colour and texture recreate the appearance of a surface weathered by the sea, as though time and ocean currents had left their mark on a relic recovered from the depths.
The composition incorporates semi-precious stones, including aventurine, whose symbolism is traditionally associated with prosperity, renewal and harmony. Their subtle glimmers interact with the marine tones, adding a mineral and energetic dimension to the piece.
The cavities of the eye sockets and nasal area have been reimagined as underwater caves: small sanctuaries of darkness that suggest hidden treasures, abyssal secrets and remnants of an unknown world.
The piece transcends its natural form to become a contemporary sculpture in which nature, symbolism and artistic expression converge. Its organic character, handcrafted finish and distinctive details make it a truly unique piece, designed to take centre stage in spaces that celebrate art, materiality and the stories that objects can evoke.
