Neptune, a murmur that rises and grows
Artwork details
Since ancient times, Neptune has often been associated with astrology and with the emotional and creative forces that move beneath the surface of human experience. The immense and unstable nature of the sea made this god a powerful symbol of temperament, inspiration, and turbulence.
His most recognizable attribute, the trident, was originally a common working tool among ancient fishermen. It should not be surprising that a sea god was gifted with this contraption.
In this painting, the trident is not raised to fish but to unsettle the sea itself — to shake what was calm and disturb what seemed stable. Within the broader series The Error of Prometheus, Neptune embodies the unpredictable forces that resist human control, reminding us that the world shaped by Promethean ambition is always exposed to the restless power of nature.
