Erika Seguín Colás: the vigour of expressiveness

Erika Seguín Colás develops a highly expressive, sophisticated painterly proposal built on a subjective reading of reality. Emotion falls into step with force to resolve what only the senses catch of life.

In the painting technique of Erika Seguín Colás (Asturias, 1979) you can see a brushstroke that is quick, loose, frayed and full of energy. The urgency and vigour with which she finishes off each touch strengthen the visual and emotional impact her compositions hold.

Although her work is figurative and focuses especially on the human body, her strokes tend towards abstraction, heightening even further that impetuous mood she stirs in whoever looks at her canvases. To achieve this, Erika Seguín Colás uses hurried movements that simplify the silhouettes. As a result, there are no perfectly defined shapes or clear outlines, but altered figures that express feelings: despair, melancholy, eroticism,... In the same way, her use of ochre, grey and blackish tones accentuates that mystical effect. At times it is intensified by very marked contrasts of light and shadow.

The Asturian painter gathers into her artwork reality just as she sees it. She turns to intimate, simple scenes, landscapes, still lifes and even to film and literary references in order to reinterpret them. She finds what she wants to reflect in the expressions that bodies convey, and in the sensations that gestures provoke. All of it she turns into emotions that connect with the viewer. Her concern, then, goes beyond a faithful rendering of the material, aiming truly at what it evokes.

Erika Seguín Colás is a technical architect. In 2011 she decided to devote herself completely to painting. It is an activity she has been tied to since childhood, when she began her artistic studies. She has taken part in various exhibitions around Spain and has also received numerous awards that vouch for the quality of her work.
