From my studio: Claudia Barbu

I was born in the late 80s, early 90s. I remember my childhood as a very happy time. I lived it to the full and with a lot of passion. I was a good girl, obedient, but full of energy. I had a lot of freedom, and that's why I learned all by myself to stand up for myself and stay out of trouble. I've always been competitive. Everything I did, I always did with passion. I grew up with sport, art and a lot of special people.

When and why did you start painting?

I started with cultural activities when I was very little, I was winning painting competitions as soon as I started art school. I was one of my teacher's favourites. It's something that comes out of me, I do it and I enjoy it, I work hard to get better.

How do you think a gallery and its artists should help each other?

Without support it's very hard for new artists to come through. Alongside the more famous artists they promote, galleries have to look for "strong" newcomers to bring in, people who show personality and commitment to this world. Just as galleries need famous artists to stand out, new artists need galleries to get themselves known, they need promotion nationally and internationally so that, little by little, they build up a CV and don't forget that you can make a living from art too.

What advice would you give to artists who are starting to show their artwork?

None. They already know what they're doing. What they want to do is another matter...

How did you sell your first artwork? Is there one you feel a stronger connection with?

I sold my first artworks to a couple of doctors. They were anatomical studies. There are several I feel a stronger connection with, but I'll show you one.

What is art for you? What part does it play in your life? Do you make a living from art?

It's my space, Love. An act of total freedom...

What are your sources of inspiration? Do you identify with any other artist?
I'm a Constant source of Inspiration myself. I don't think I identify with any artist.

What is it about your creative process that makes it special?
Lots of feeling. A good atmosphere. Good music.

Have you had any exhibitions lately, what can you tell us? Do you have any project in mind?
Yes, the last exhibition was in February 2017. I'm very open and I have new plans, but I'd rather not talk about that before its time.
