With every gesture of color he spreads across his canvases, Joan Llaverias manages to give freedom a physical form and invites the viewer to dive into hypnotic chromatic dreams.

Joan Llaverias Baques (Vilanova i la Geltrú, 1965) has been painting professionally for more than twenty years. A specialist in dreamlike, geometric abstraction, the Catalan artist lets himself be carried along by the order that the stroke of instinct imposes, experimenting with gestural painting and drawing on the American Informalist current of the last century.

There are two clear leading players in his artwork: color and the freedom born of each movement. A spontaneous will through which he carries into all his paintings brushstrokes soaked in a deep and beautiful lyrical drama. The same drama that plunges whoever looks at them into a whirl of overwhelming sensations, the fruit of pure chromatic explosions. Creating, in this way, a strong and pleasing visual impact. For that he mainly uses acrylic, a material that lets him develop greater creative variety and produce a more energetic, freer stroke.

In his geometric side, he unloads vivid patches of color, designed like the pieces of a puzzle that fit together through intuition. In his series California, he scatters the expressive possibilities of color across each canvas. He does it, too, with very bright tones that play with the white spaces, setting off a crowded labyrinth of emotions. But his creative freedom has more surprises in store. Artworks like xocolat, where he reaches an extraordinary, delicate contrast of light with an intoxicating warmth.
