In each of her canvases, Lucía Humet Struth (Barcelona, 1950) returns again and again to the essence of matter, to an art free of the tyranny of form that overcomes the ever present tension between matter and spirit.
The Catalan painter builds a universe full of textures and with a strongly spiritual character. In it, the material substrate takes on a leading role, because it goes beyond its own state to express the artist's inner world. So, through painting, Lucía Humet Struth manages to give shape to her emotions, and she does it in the form of abstract landscapes, wrapped in a deeply informalist nature.
Her artworks suggest, they don't explain. They aim to convey the emotion and the strength of the central elements of her pieces: her own experiences and the inspiration she finds in the sea and the light. In this way she shares her inner gaze with the viewer and invites them to be carried along by the expressiveness of her work, achieved through a delicate and harmonious handling of mixed media.
Her command of different painting techniques and materials lets her capture in the best possible way those moods or elements of the natural world she sets out to represent. Along these lines, she works in oil and acrylic and brings other elements into her compositions, such as wood, silk and sand, arriving at those textures that so strongly evoke the look of nature. She also heightens this effect with the earthy, grey, blue and orange tones she tends to use, which carry you off to the sea caves, gorges and storms reproduced in her paintings.
As a result, her canvases point to a dialogue between the material and the emotional qualities of painting, letting forms and matter bring out their joint value through a sensory experimentation with substance.
