There is no colour combination that Spanish painter Luis Antonio Juarez Palomo (Toledo, 1952) can't pull off with captivating results, able to cast a complete spell over the viewer. His success runs through the exploration of colour as emotion.
This burst of colour takes shape in landscapes, in the depiction of animals, of still lifes with flowers, and also in portraits and female nudes. In the latter, he homes in on the anatomy of women and their sensuality through light and pigment, using them to pin down whatever he wants to bring out. Sometimes he works on a black ground, giving colour only to the parts he wants to reveal to us and underlining the expressive power of his sitters through the eyes.
Another feature inherent to his painting is his habitual handling of a colour range of strong, lively tones that create striking visual contrasts. He squeezes out the possibilities of colour in acrylic and oil, leaving compositions that wrap around you and give great visual pleasure.
Landscape is the other genre most present in his artwork. Views, especially of Toledo, his home city, and seascapes, which he tends to paint with great verisimilitude and then interprets and bathes in colour, playing with it to underline the shades that interest him most. His landscapes in particular are loaded with colour reflections that dig into ideas such as symmetry and turn nature into a mirror for the artist and his feelings. Something that extends to his peculiar dramatic effects between light and shadow.
Taken as a whole, his style varies, answering to a free register that is sensitive to the expressive capacity of colour. He goes from meticulous, realist-leaning strokes to brushwork that seems to brush up against abstraction. And which, in an exercise of creative freedom, he sometimes merges.
A surgeon by profession, Luis Antonio Juarez Palomo is an artist by vocation and everything he knows he has taught himself. He has held various painting exhibitions, both group and solo, in Toledo, Alicante and Orihuela.
