Xolotl Polo's painting gathers the people, the colours and the landscapes of his own experiences. On his canvases he sets up a stage of gesture and deconstruction to play with light and shapes, creating suggestive, loose atmospheres that brush against the border between abstraction and figuration.
The artist Xolotl Polo (Mexico City, 1964) has a degree in graphic design from the Universidad Iberoamericana A.C. Not having studied fine arts didn't stop him from throwing himself completely into the world of painting. A world he knew first hand thanks to a childhood surrounded by art, since both his father and his mother worked in it.
His style draws mainly on expressionism, abstraction and pop art, as far as the use of solid, flat backgrounds goes. He also uses striking colours that connect with the viewer straight away.
Though if anything defines Xolotl Polo's output it's the creative freedom with which he works, letting himself explore his artistic curiosities as well as different painting techniques such as watercolour, acrylic, pastel, oil, mural and photolithography. Practising and experimenting as if every artwork were the first seems to be the artist's philosophy. What matters is not only the result, the finished artwork, but even more so the process, the passion in every brushstroke.
In 1998, Xolotl Polo won his first painting prize, awarded by the Sociedad de Acuarelistas de Morelos and the government of the state of Morelos. Since then he has taken part in various national and international painting competitions, winning several first places as well as a number of Honourable Mentions and Selections. Over these years he has picked up various prizes and taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Europe and the Americas.
