FOREST SPIRIT
Artwork details
Totem of Intuition, Renewal and Mystery
This work emerges from the fusion of sculpture and painting applied to animal bones recovered from nature, giving them a second life through an artistic process that honours the memory, strength and essence of each animal.
Created on a deer skull, the piece transcends its organic origins to become a totemic sculpture of symbolic and ritualistic character. Its composition brings together bone structures, reliefs, textures and flashes of colour that seem to emerge from a primordial universe, where natural matter is transformed into a mysterious, fantastical presence.
The artistic intervention does not seek to conceal the origins of its constituent elements, but rather to establish a dialogue between them. The deer skull, the fox jawbone and the opal are integrated into a single structure, creating a symbolic creature that evokes the union of different forces from the animal and mineral worlds.
The work seems to guard an ancestral energy: that of deep forests, hidden paths and creatures that move between light and shadow.
The Deer: Renewal, Intuition and Connection with the Wild
The choice of a deer skull lends the piece a symbolic dimension associated with regeneration, intuition, elegance and a connection with the untamed natural world.
The deer is a recurring figure in numerous cultural and mythological traditions. Its presence is often associated with sensitivity, alertness, nobility and the ability to find one's way through unfamiliar territories. Its silent, attentive movements evoke a form of strength that does not need to assert itself, but instead manifests through perception and an understanding of its surroundings.
One of its most significant characteristics is the renewal cycle of its antlers. Each new growth symbolises rebirth, evolution and the ability to regain strength after a period of change.
In this sculpture, the deer represents the spirit of the forest: a guardian presence connecting the earthly with the invisible, instinct with intuition, and physical matter with the mystery of existence.
Its skull becomes the foundation of a new sculptural identity, in which animal memory is transformed into a symbol of evolution and continuity.
The Fox Jawbone: Instinct, Intelligence and Adaptability
The fox jawbone, incorporated as the central element, introduces a powerful visual and symbolic presence. Its inclusion establishes a dialogue between two animals traditionally associated with different, yet complementary, qualities.
While the deer evokes sensitivity, alertness and renewal, the fox represents cunning, instinctive intelligence, adaptability and the ability to discover alternative paths in the face of difficulty.
In symbolic imagery, the fox is a creature that understands the boundaries between light and darkness. It moves discreetly, observes before acting and discovers possibilities where others perceive only obstacles. For this reason, it is associated with strategy, mental agility and the ability to navigate changing circumstances.
Integrated into the centre of the composition, the jawbone takes on an almost ceremonial presence. It ceases to be merely an anatomical remnant and becomes an emblem of perception and instinctive knowledge.
Its position reinforces the impression that the sculpture brings different natures together within a single symbolic being: the nobility of the deer and the adaptive intelligence of the fox.
This union can be interpreted as an invitation to find balance between sensitivity and strategy, between listening to intuition and acting with determination. It represents a combination of qualities that allows us to move through unfamiliar territories without losing the ability to observe, understand and transform ourselves.
The Opal: Light, Mystery and Transformation
The opal occupies an essential place in the identity of the work. Its shifting reflections and rich colours introduce a mineral presence that seems to contain an entire universe of light within it.
Unlike stones with a uniform appearance, opal can display flashes and variations of colour that change according to the lighting and the angle from which it is viewed. This quality makes it particularly suited to the character of the sculpture, whose surface appears to shift between dark tones, blue, green and violet reflections, and warm accents.
In contemporary symbolism, opal is often associated with transformation, creativity, intuition and the expression of individuality. Its ever-changing appearance evokes the multiplicity of meanings that a single form can hold, as well as the possibility of discovering new realities by changing one's perspective.
Within this composition, the opal acts as a nucleus of light and mystery. Its flashes of colour contrast with the density of the bone and the dark textures of the surface, creating the impression of a latent energy emerging from within the piece.
Symbolically, the stone represents that which remains hidden until it encounters the right light: intuition, creativity and the ability to recognise beauty in the unexpected.
Thus, the opal is not merely an ornamental element, but a meeting point between the mineral world and artistic transformation. Its presence lends depth, individuality and an almost dreamlike dimension to the composition.
The Eye Sockets: Thresholds Between Worlds
The deep, dark eye sockets heighten the enigmatic character of the skull. Their appearance recalls small caves or thresholds leading into an unknown inner space.
These hollows evoke the boundary between the visible and the hidden, between presence and absence, between the tangible matter we can touch and that which we can only sense.
The absence of a gaze does not imply emptiness, but rather an openness to interpretation. The skull seems to retain a silent presence, as though the animal's memory continued to inhabit its structure from another dimension.
The contrast between the dark cavities, mineral-like reflections and vivid accents of colour reinforces the impression of encountering a guardian figure situated in an intermediate realm between the natural and the fantastical.
The sculpture therefore invites us to contemplate not only its outer form, but also what remains concealed: memory, instinct and the meanings each observer projects onto the work.
Composition and Technique
The work is created on a deer skull, transformed through a sculptural and painterly process that enhances its anatomical structure and explores its expressive potential.
The surface displays a rich variety of textures and reliefs, contrasting dark areas with intense reflections in shades of blue, green, violet, copper, red and gold. The glossy finish intensifies the chromatic depth and creates an iridescent appearance, as though the material had undergone a natural process of metamorphosis.
The fox jawbone, positioned as the central element, introduces a second bone structure that challenges the conventional reading of the skull and reinforces the hybrid nature of the composition. Its integration creates a visual tension between the original anatomical forms and the piece's new, fantastical identity.
The opal introduces a mineral counterpoint through its flashes of light and variations in colour, establishing a dialogue between the solidity of bone and the apparent fluidity of light.
The different elements come together in an unrepeatable composition, where organic matter, painterly treatment and mineral presence converge in an aesthetic that lies somewhere between the primordial, the ritualistic and the fantastical.
Every texture and contrast contributes to the impression that the sculpture does not simply represent an animal, but rather a creature born from the union of different natural forces.
A Totem of Intuition, Renewal and Mystery
This work brings together three complementary symbolic presences that enrich one another: the deer, the fox and the opal.
The deer represents renewal, nobility and a connection with the natural world. The fox embodies instinctive intelligence, cunning and adaptability. The opal introduces shifting light, creativity and the mystery of transformation.
Together, they form a totemic figure that invites reflection on the balance between sensitivity and action, intuition and strategy, permanence and change.
The sculpture evokes a guardian of the forest, a presence familiar with both visible and hidden paths, one that observes in silence and finds in transformation a way to continue existing.
Its hybrid nature breaks away from conventional animal representation and opens the door to an imaginative world of its own, where natural elements become symbols of a deeper force.
A unique piece for those who see art as a bridge between nature and symbolism, between the ancestral and the contemporary. A totem of intuition, renewal and mystery that reminds us that true strength lies not only in power, but also in the ability to perceive, adapt and transform without losing one's essence.
