José Morán and El Greco

José Morán Vázquez (1959 Gálvez, Toledo), one of Artelista's most outstanding artists, won the first Painting Prize and the first Drawing Prize of the Provincial Youth Delegation of Toledo back in 1972. Those two prizes were followed by many others, many, and by a whole list of accolades for his marvellous work, to which he now proudly adds one more: being the first living painter in history to exhibit at the Museo del Greco.

José Morán has been chosen by the director of the Museo del Greco, Mr Juan Antonio García, and by the Ministry of Culture as the contemporary painter most influenced by the painting of the Cretan genius. His tribute artworks can be seen from 26 August until 5 October in an exhibition that enriches the many proposals we have been able to see and enjoy this year as part of El Greco 2014, an important programme of events commemorating the fourth centenary of El Greco's death.

The pieces on display at the museum are interpretations of some of the painter's most outstanding artworks, and with them José Morán not only pays tribute to the great master of art history, he also lets us see how El Greco was his greatest reference and source of inspiration right from the start.

Below these lines we can see the artwork Fernando Niño de Guevara by José Morán, an expressionist interpretation of the painting Retrato del cardenal Fernando Niño de Guevara that El Greco made between 1597 and 1600. It is part of the exhibition and it is the artwork chosen to illustrate the Toledo painter's participation in it.
