María José Buxó builds spaces full of harmony and beauty through a sensitive use of colour. Her artwork concentrates an overflowing visual power put together out of an intense combination of tones and the suggestive shapes she proposes.
The Catalan painter calls her compositions chromatic fantasies. And she is quite right to, because her creations wrap the viewer in pleasurable atmospheres that the artist builds out of a captivating, elegant handling of colour. The result is artworks it's almost impossible to look away from.
To feed this brimming universe, María José Buxó translates her emotions into colourful, vibrant, harmonious appearances that she materialises using inks on paper. She turns her work into a calm trip to places imagined or remembered. To seabeds loaded with corals and anemones, to the whirl of a tornado, to the nostalgia of autumn, to mythological scenes and, above all, she plunges us into the complex, deep shapes of the spirit. Turning into pure emotion those actions and elements of nature, of the human being or of whatever surfaces from her imagination, under subjective and balanced designs.
In her fantasies, colour takes the leading role. It evaporates and spreads out, playing with our gaze, through calm tones that, when the situation calls for it, turn irresistibly warm and burning. Her paintings describe landscapes as much as feelings by means of abstract shapes that hold on to a figurative impulse and that answer, at every moment, to an extremely delicate aesthetic.
María José Buxó has spent more than thirty years taking part in group exhibitions organised in Catalonia. She has also exhibited solo at the Casal de Sarrià in Barcelona and, on two occasions, at the Sala Carles Sindreu in L'Ametlla del Vallés.
