Until 27 August we can enjoy the 20th anniversary of PHotoESPAÑA and see what these years of change and revolution have meant for photography and the visual arts. PHotoESPAÑA was born in 1998 out of La Fábrica, with the aim of giving this medium the place it deserved on the cultural map and of doing so through a festival built from society itself.
On this anniversary PHotoESPAÑA looks back at the past and gets ready for the future. From a unique vantage point it brings us closer to how the national and international scene has evolved, and it stands up for the work of fully established artists alongside the unknown ones. A chance to enjoy 100 exhibitions with artworks by 514 artists and a programme of 20 activities for professionals and for the general public held across 62 venues, among them Madrid, Alcalá de Henares, Alcobendas, Murcia, Segovia and Zaragoza. PHotoESPAÑA also has seven European venues: the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which hosts the projects Undressed by Mario Testino, Unseen by Helmut Newton and Pool Party by Jean Pigozzi; the Central European House of Photography in Bratislava offers the chance to discover Unknown Slovakia through the work of the photographers of the Bilderberg agency; the Musée Nicéphore – Niépce, in Chalon Sur Saône, presents the exhibition Above all: the photographic object, the Musée de L'Elysée in Lausanne hosts the group show Slides. The history of projected photography; PhotoIreland presents the exhibition Bellum et Pax, by Steven Nestor, at The Tara Building. The town of Mérignac celebrates photography at the Merignac Photography Festival and the Fundacja Bec Zmiana in Warsaw shows Diana Lelonek in the exhibition My Rosine. Growing on me. In Asia, the fifth edition of Photo Beijing joins the festival programme under the title Photography: origins and future, and in Japan Kyotographie takes part with the exhibition Falling Leaves by Akihito Yoshida. In the United States the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago brings together in the show #AIWEIWEI images taken by the Chinese artist in the 80s and 90s along with installations made today. Alberto García-Alix visits Fola – Fototeca Latinoamericana in Argentina with the exhibition De donde no se vuelve, and finally, in Australia, the Iranian artist Hoda Afshar presents the exhibition Behold at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne.

Lo más destacado de PHotoESPAÑAAmong the highlights of this edition of PHotoESPAÑA we can mention La exaltación del ser, in which Alberto García-Alix has brought together six “heterodox authors, whose creations move away from the norm and feed on the most intimate and passionate side of the author”, as he himself puts it. Anders Petersen, Paulo Nozolino, Antoine d'Agata, Pierre Molinier, Karlheinz Weinberger and Teresa Margolles with six exhibitions, and Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin heading up a publishing laboratory.

La exposición Café Lehmitz ofrece en CentroCentro la oportunidad de conocer material inédito de este mítico proyecto de Anders Petersen, obra clave de la historia de la fotografía contemporánea. Más de 300 imágenes entre las que se incluyen los descartes y las hojas de contactos del fotógrafo sueco que, entre 1968 y 1970, retrató a los clientes habituales del café. Prostitutas, proxenetas, travestis o indigentes componen un magnífico retrato sobre la camaradería que se respiraba en aquel café de Hamburgo.

La mexicana Teresa Margolles denuncia en Pista de baile la indefensión y el maltrato que sufren las prostitutas transexuales de Ciudad Juárez. En el Palacio de Cibeles se puede contemplar esta exposición sobre la muerte y la violencia de estas mujeres, algunas de ellas ya fallecidas a manos de asesinos.

Otra exposición a destacar es la del portugués Paulo Nozolino Loaded Shine, en la sala Goya del Círculo de Bellas Artes. El artista nos presenta paisajes sublimes con los que reflexiona sobre el lugar, no solo emocional, sino también físico, que ocupa la ausencia. Una veintena de fotografías que presentan un mundo en constante destrucción.
Karlheinz Weinberger
El Museo del Romanticismo presenta la muestra En un círculo de rebeldes del suizo Karlheinz Weinberger. Una buena ocasión para descubrir la obra más icónica de este autor, con fotografías tomadas en su juventud y publicadas en los años 50. Weinberger, fascinado por la simbología y la rotundidad de la cultura de rockeros, rebeldes y chaperos, capta la vida de estos originales personajes.

Grandes nombres de la fotografía y nuevas voces en la Sección Oficial del FestivalMadrid hosts 22 exhibitions within the festival's Official Section, among them those at the Real Jardín Botánico, where Elliott Erwitt presents Cuba, an exhibition bringing together images taken by the Magnum photographer on the island in 1964 and in 2015, and Peter Fraser, who in Matemáticas challenges visitors to discover the numerical dimension of everything around us.

Cristina García Rodero reconocida con el Premio Premio PHotoESPAÑA de esta edición, presenta en el Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa Lalibela, cerca del cielo, un proyecto que documenta el conjunto de iglesias medievales que alberga la ciudad etíope y que la fotógrafa española visitó entre 2000 y 2009. Además La Fundación Loewe ofrece la oportunidad de descubrir la obra de Minor White, fundador de la revista Aperture, en una muestra de alrededor de 40 imágenes que recorren cuatro décadas de producción del fotógrafo estadounidense. La Fundación Telefónica rinde homenaje a la cámara Leica, en Con los ojos bien abiertos. Cien años de fotografía Leica, con más de 300 fotografías y material documental.Among all the exhibitions we can also single out the one at the Museo ICO, which explores the work of Gabriele Basílico in the exhibition Entropía y espacio urbano, a show that traces the evolution of his images of built spaces. The Museo Cerralbo reveals the photographic side of filmmaker Carlos Saura in the exhibition España años 50, a unique record of the Spain of that time.

The new voices of photography also have their space in venues such as Casa de América, the Sala Canal de Isabel II and the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, among others. The Sala Canal de Isabel II offers Un cierto panorama –reciente fotografía de autor en España – with artworks by more than 50 authors representing the new trends in photography in our country. In Confluencias: 10 años de Trasatlántica Casa de América brings together the work of 19 authors who have taken part in the portfolio viewings held in Latin America, in an exhibition marking its tenth anniversary. A forum that in 2016 travelled to the African continent for the first time, with a portfolio viewing session in Dakar. A selection of those works comes together at the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa in the exhibition Pensar en el futuro. Nuevos relatos fotográficos en Dakar. The Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, for its part, rounds off its programme with the exhibition Carbono by Murcia-born Gil Antonio Munuera, who shows his latest works.
Casa de América also has the exhibitions Cuentos amazónicos by Rafael Milani, the project that won the first edition of the Acciona Photography prize “Environment and sustainability” at Trasatlántica 2016, and Watkins, el paisaje de Estados Unidos en la colección fotográfica de Sorolla, one of the finest collections of historical American photography.

PHE17 cuenta con muestras que ahondan en la relación de la fotografía con otros lenguajes artísticos o que testimonian la pasión que grandes artistas plásticos demuestran por este medio. El Museo Lázaro Galdiano en A la pata coja recoge una selección de fotografías de la colección particular del pintor Eduardo Arroyo, procedentes de diferentes periodos y estilos pero que comparten el denominador común de mostrar a personas en poses que retan a la gravedad. La artista iraní Farideh Lashai interviene en el Museo del Prado en los Desastres de la guerra, de Goya en una videoinstalación que reelabora las estampas de la serie.The Museo Sorolla presents Sorolla en su paraíso, a reconstruction of the Valencian painter's world through the eye of the photography of his day. At the Museo del Traje, Yolanda Domínguez challenges the stereotypes of the “perfect woman” imposed by today's society in the previously unseen project Little Black Dress. Photographer Fernando Maqueira, from La Mancha, explores at Tabacalera. Promoción del Arte – Estudios the effect on an artwork of looking at it when the museums are closed to the public.
You can also enjoy the exhibition proposals of the 36 Madrid galleries that make up the Festival Off network, which sets out to boost the promotion and development of the photography market. This section reflects the participatory, collaborative spirit of PHotoESPAÑA, a shared project with a great variety of proposals and exhibition spaces. The Festival Off includes work by Roger Ballen, Pilar Pequeño, Marina Núñez, Alberto García-Alix, Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb, Catalá –Roca, Marta Soul, Cristina Macaya, Emi Anrakuji, Eduardo Momeñe, Mariana Cook, Cristobal Hara, Paloma Gámez, Alejandro Marote and Kathy Ryan, among others.
