Spain, Argentina and Portugal, the countries with the most artists at Art Fair Málaga '17

The 1st International Contemporary Art Fair adds 1,000 square metres to its exhibition space to meet the huge demand to take part

Málaga, 5 May 2017. Spain, Argentina and Portugal will be the countries with the strongest representation at Art Fair Málaga '17 – 1st International Contemporary Art Fair, to be held at the Málaga Trade Fairs and Congress Centre (Fycma) from 30 June to 2 July 2017. In total, 27 countries will be represented at the second largest contemporary art fair in Spain.
Having filled 100% of the exhibition space two months before the opening, the fair's organisers have decided to add another 1,000 square metres to the floor space and so respond to the large number of applications received. That means a final total of 7,000 metres given over to more than 400 artists and 37 art galleries from all over the world.
A strong European presence
Of the 400 artists confirmed for Art Fair Málaga '17, 87% come from Europe, 7.5% from the Americas and the rest from Africa and Asia. Spain is the country with the largest number of participants, with a total of 350 artists. As for the rest of Europe, Portugal with 10 and France and Great Britain with 6 representatives each will be the ones with the most artists, followed by Germany, Holland, Russia, Italy, Denmark and Belgium.

From the Americas will come another 30 artists, of whom 8 are from Costa Rica, 7 from Argentina and 4 from Chile. There will also be creators from Ecuador, Venezuela, Paraguay, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Canada and the USA. The remaining artists come from Africa (Tunisia and Morocco) and Asia (United Arab Emirates). On top of these figures, another 200 artists will take part in the fair through the digital exhibition.

Andalusia, Madrid and Catalonia, the best represented regions
As for Spanish participation by region, Andalusia will be the most strongly represented, since 74 of the artists at Art Fair Málaga '17 come from there. Next, the largest contingents will be from Madrid, with 70 artists; Catalonia with 40, the Valencian Community with 26 and the Basque Country with 20. There will also be creators from Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and the Canary Islands.

The international participation extends to the galleries too: of the 38 confirmed, besides Spain they come from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the USA, Italy, Switzerland and Portugal. The same goes for the associations, which come from countries such as Portugal, Finland and Costa Rica, as well as Spain.

So Fycma will host a total of 400 individual artists, 38 art galleries and Spanish and international associations and public institutions from 27 countries, figures that make it the second largest international contemporary art fair in Spain.

Martín Gallego Montero, director of Art Fair Málaga '17, points out that "as an organisation we're very pleased with the great interest Art Fair Málaga has generated internationally. A first edition with 27 participating countries is quite an achievement and we believe it is also thanks to the strong cultural profile Málaga is betting on right now. With our event we want to confirm that momentum and be part of it".

Art Fair Málaga '17 – 1st International Contemporary Art Fair will take place at the Málaga Trade Fairs and Congress Centre from 30 June to 2 July 2017. With an exhibition space of 7,000 square metres, Art Fair Málaga '17 expects to attract more than 15,000 visitors in this first edition, with the aim of bringing art closer to a wide public who, as well as walking round the different stands, will be able to take part in the programme of talks, lectures, live painting, performances and recreational activities.

Art Fair Málaga '17 is built around the idea of service to the exhibitor, focused on offering a space in which to build a network of direct contacts between artists, galleries and the public, promoting a new culture of collecting and recovering the old idea of a fair as a place for selling.

The fair adds to the emergence of Málaga as "the city where art lives". The recent report by the company Turismo y Planificación de la Costa del Sol notes that the city's 37 museums received more than two million people in 2015 and drove the creation of 6,100 jobs.
