Frozen Whispers

Two red-breasted birds perch among pale branches and clusters of red berries in Frozen Whispers, an original mixed media artwork on canvas by Ukrainian artist Aleksandr Dubrovskyy. Measuring 35 cm wide by 30 cm high, this intimate winter composition brings recognizable natural forms into a richly textured, almost abstract setting.

A network of white lines crosses the surface like frost spreading across glass. Some lines describe branches; others dissolve into irregular patterns, allowing the eye to move between a winter thicket and the intricate structure of the painted surface.

The birds provide two distinct focal points. Their dark heads, light wing markings, and warm red-orange breasts stand out against muted plum, brown, blue, and violet tones. Small groups of berries repeat these warm accents across the composition, connecting the birds through color.

I explore the contrast between delicate linear forms and densely worked areas of texture. Pale passages suggest snow and frost, while darker layers give depth to the spaces between the branches. The close viewpoint leaves little open sky, drawing attention to the sheltered world within the vegetation.

The title, Frozen Whispers, invites a quiet, poetic reading of the scene. The presence of the birds introduces a sense of life within the stillness, while the frost-like patterns give this winter image a dreamlike quality.
