Spinoza's Lens
Artwork details
Three horizontal fields hold this painting: a deep oxblood band above, a wide burning orange at the centre, and a dense black ground below. Fine incised lines run along the two horizons, and on them sit a few small blocks, like distant buildings or instruments placed to measure the light. The orange is not a flat colour but a field of dragged and scraped paint, where earlier layers show through the strokes. I think of a lens as something that does not add light but focuses it. Here the central band works that way: it gathers the heat between two heavier masses and makes the small presences on its edges visible. The painting stays open to that tension between weight and clarity, without fixing what it means.
