Courtesy of the giant Amazon, here's a set of art-related recommendations you can't miss.
Loving Vincent
The first film in the history of cinema made in oils, and by one of Europe's finest names in animation, the Polish director Dorota Kobiela. More than 65,000 animated frames painted by hand by artists from all over the world, with a spectacular look, the film moves through Van Gogh's paintings and his mysterious life by way of the letters he so often wrote to his younger brother Theo.
Van Gogh, At Eternity's Gate
A feature that takes us to the most twilit Van Gogh: his final years in Arles (France), where he gave life to some of his most emblematic artworks such as Lirios, La noche estrellada or Campo de trigo con cipreses. His inward journey, his relationship with Gauguin (Oscar Isaac), his passage through pain, isolation and his sense of failure are masterfully played by the great Willem Dafoe in a memorable performance that brings the Dutch painter to life.
Finding Altamira
Although the discovery of the Altamira paintings (Cantabria) in 1879 by the amateur archaeologist Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola (Antonio Banderas) and his eight-year-old daughter, María, looked set to bring them recognition and glory, nothing could have been further from the truth: bringing to light one of the most important prehistoric artworks meant a clash with the Catholic Church and with the indifference and mockery of the scientific community. The film reflects Sanz de Sautuola's desperate attempt to prove that his find was genuine.
Genius: Picasso
From National Geographic comes this biopic of the Spanish icon Pablo Picasso, played in his maturity by fellow Malaga native Antonio Banderas, in childhood by Alessio Scalzotto and as a young man by Alex Rich. Through a deconstruction of time, as if it were an artwork by the iconic artist, it places us in the painter's life during his childhood in Malaga, his training in Madrid and Barcelona and his Parisian love affairs.
Museum Secrets
A rediscovery, through this documentary series, of the known and the unknown on a trip around different museums of the world. In each episode, using the most advanced technologies, the aim is to dismantle the myths around 6 specific artefacts from each of them.
Berlin Encrucijada
An independent feature telling the life of a Dutch painter, Jos Bakker (Marcel Romeijn), who is torn between following the bohemian path of artistic Berlin or settling down and starting a family. Available on this platform in its original version with Spanish subtitles.
Amazon's offering will certainly keep us going for several days, but if you want a few more films on your to-watch list, there are also these films to watch on Netflix and this selection from Filmin.
