The Danish Girl
The Danish Girl is a film based on the novel of the same name by David Ebershoff and directed by Tom Hopper. It tells the true story of the Danish painter Lili Elbe, the first transgender woman to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Their married life takes a turn when Einar stands in for the female model his wife, Gerda, has to paint. Starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander (winner of the Oscar for best supporting actress for this film), it was warmly received by audiences and critics at its premiere (2015) at the Venice International Film Festival.
The Da Vinci Code
The Da Vinci Code is a 2006 film directed by the prolific Ron Howard (Splash, Cocoon, A Beautiful Mind) and starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou. Based on Dan Brown's bestseller, it was released in 2006 and set off a row with the Catholic Church over some controversial readings of the history of Christianity. So much so that some countries even censored it.
Unicorn Store
This indie comedy is Brie Larson's first film as a director, and she stars in it too. With a very well defined universe of its own, it tells the story of Kit, a failed artist who gets a mysterious letter from an anonymous salesman (Samuel L. Jackson) inviting her to "The Store", where she'll be able to fulfil her childhood fantasies. A trip towards the main character asserting herself as a person in her adult life.
Velvet Buzzsaw
This psychological horror thriller holds up a mirror to the ruthless world of the art trade, where its main character, Josephina (Zawe Ashton), stumbles by chance upon a collection of paintings by an unknown, already dead artist who had expressly asked for his work to be destroyed after his death. After trying to cash in by showing the artwork to top figures in the industry, including her boss Rhodora (Russo), the art critic Morf (Gyllenhaal) and the art collector Gretchen (Collette), and even though the artist's work wins the public's admiration, with her actions Josefina awakens something imperceptible and sinister that will make anyone who has tried to trade with them against the artist's wishes pay dearly. The third film directed by Dan Gilroy, author of the disturbing and critical NightCrawler.
Belmonte
This terrific film directed by the Uruguayan Federico Veiroj tells the story of Javier Belmonte (played by the equally terrific Gonzalo Delgado), an artist in his mature period who runs into conflict between his personal life and his artistic one. The Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo is putting on a painting exhibition, but the painter is more distracted by the big changes life is throwing at him, and he'll hold on to his daughter and to everyday things, which will be his essential guide.
Dot 2 Dot
This intimate film recounts Chung's return to Hong Kong from Canada, where he discovers how enormously the city has changed since he left it years ago. Full of nostalgia and wanting to recover his childhood memories, Chung invents a join-the-dots game with the spots that marked his past around the city. That's where Xue comes in, a young woman who starts to take an interest in the mysterious puzzles and, through them and through modern Hong Kong, discovers what lies behind them.
Saimdang, memoir of colors
Lee Young-ae is back after a long absence from our screens, Jewel in the Palace (Dae Jang Geum in its original title) was her previous television hit 14 years ago, to star in a double role in this story about a Korean art historian who discovers an old text by a famous artist from the days of the Joseon dynasty. This historical drama, set both in present-day Korea and in the Korea of 500 years ago, has been especially well received internationally. It can be found with Spanish subtitles on the Californian platform.
