La mitad de la mirada (Half of the Gaze)

In this painting I tried to unearth a presence through physical work with the paint. A frontal face is divided vertically into two halves: one sinks into a dense, irregular black; the other emerges in earth tones and ochres, like terracotta or weathered stone. The eyes appear by scraping and incising the layers, revealing the pale ground beneath, as in an ancient relief. I want to hold these two forces on the same surface without reducing them to a resolved identity. The frontality and stillness keep a tension that makes me think of the different sides that live in each of us, and of recognising them without erasing their differences.
