The Museo del Prado presents “La Colección. La otra ampliación”, one of the highlights of its art reorganization plan based on the reopening of the Central Gallery in the main floor,-upon completion of its renovation- and major changes in the arrangement of the collections.
The new arrangement permits the continuity between the two great modern European traditions represented in the Prado -the Italian and the Flemish painting-, and the Spanish one, with Diego Velázquez in the center. For the first time, in a longitudinal and cross travel, the visitor can recognize the influence of the great masters like Titian and Rubens, now in the Central Gallery, on the Spanish painters, from El Greco to Goya.
Meanwhile, in the north wing of the rooms flanking the gallery, Ribera and the first Naturalists, -like Maine, Zurbarán and the first paintings of Velázquez- are connected with the Italian Baroque painting. In the south wing, works by Spanish masters of the second half of the century such as Murillo, Cano or Carreño de Miranda are the main protagonists.
Finally, Goya is shown together with the painters who worked for the new Bourbon dynasty in the eighteenth century, such as Mengs or the Tiepolo.
The Central Gallery now hosts 59 works, almost all large-format paintings, which form the backbone of the new collection’s presentation. The intervention in this large space, supervised by Rafael Moneo, has allowed the rescue of several architectural elements.
