Portraits of the Belle Époque

Portraits of the Belle Epoque is the new exhibition hosted by CaixaForum Barcelona until October 9 in which traces the evolution of painting movements in the last decades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a period of profound change framed by the Franco -Prussian and the First World War.

Organized in nine areas: Self-portraits, The Picture of society, Temperament and character, Group portraits, Environments and conversations, Pictures en plein air, Toulouse-Lautrec, Portrait as a symbol and Crisis, the exhibition offers a look at the Belle Époque complex movement  in order to unlock the iconographic and psychological keys of a  pivotal time for the construction of the modern spirit.

In the exhibition, visitors will meet about one hundred works for approximately two dozen artists from nearly forty museums and private collections in Europe and America. Among many others, works by Anders Zorn, Edouard Manet, Ramon Casas, Edvard Munch, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Max Oppenheimer, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Max Pechstein and Ernst L. Kirchner, who form, together with Giovanni Boldini, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Valentin A. Serov and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the galaxy's portrait of Europe.
