Fashion and Art. A passionate affair

The Gemeente Museum Den Haag (the Netherlands) hosts the exhibition Fashion and Art, A passionate affair, which shows how attire is used by powerful women to stand out from the crowd and how art has often been a major source of inspiration for dress designers. The exhibition includes creations by Liberty, Sonia Delaunay, Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy.

The exhibition, which will run until January 8, 2012, shows how, since the Second World War, the interaction between art and fashion has been frequent.

In the 1950s Karel Appel produced signed fabric designs, in the ’60s the Bijenkorf department store sold dresses inspired by Op Art, and since then the emergence of Minimalist art has given rise to a widespread taste for sober, often asymmetrical designs. Moreover, fashion designs have increasingly been regarded as autonomous works of art. Some creations by designers like Viktor & Rolf now go so far in that direction as to be scarcely wearable at all.
