The fourth exhibition presented by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain) as part of the Laboratories: Insights into the Permanent Collection initiative is dedicated to Aitor Ortiz (Bilbao, 1971), a visual artist known for using photography as a means of studying architecture and space.
This edition, which will take November 13 presents his work Light Walls 011 (Muros de luz 011), on display at the Museum for the first time since its acquisition.
The Laboratories initiative was inaugurated in 2007 with two shows dedicated to artists Jesús Mari Lazkano (Bergara, 1960) and Koldobika Jauregi (Alkiza, 1959), and continued in 2008 with the presentation of the educational work Your World, Your City (Tu mundo, tu ciudad, 2003) by Valencian artist Miquel Navarro (Mislata, 1945).
These presentations aim to promote the dissemination and knowledge of modern and contemporary art and acquaint the public with the creative process of works that are part of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection.
Aitor Ortiz is a Basque photographer whose work has been closely linked to architecture and the study of space. His photographs are characterized by a novel fusion of photographic, architectural, sculptural, and light elements that recreate an imaginary, timeless, mysterious, impenetrable landscape.
Light Walls 011, acquired by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2008, belongs to the eponymous series the artist created between 2004 and 2006. With a photographic basis obtained at the black marble quarry in Markina (Bizkaia), Aitor Ortiz enters the primitive place from which the material comes and inserts orthogonal spaces of pure white light.
Date: until November 13.
Place: Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Avenida Abandoibarra, 2 48001 Bilbao. Biskaia. Spain.
Opening hours: from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 8pm.
