The Mikkel Museum (Tallinn, Estonia) hosts the exhibition Portraiture in Fine Art. Based on Private Collections. In cooperation with the St. Lucas Gallery and seven private collectors, the museum has composed a diverse display, which shows different types of portraits in local private collections from the 17th century onwards.
The majority of exhibited portraits originate from the 18th and 19th centuries. The range of portraits covers almost all genres, from the official portrait to the fragile miniature. The paintings of officers and beautiful ladies show the development of fashion trends and beauty ideals from the late 18th century to the early 20th century.
There is also a painting by Édouard Manet on display, which depicts Victorine Meurent, who was the model for many of Manet’s masterpieces, including his famous Olympia.
The exhibition includes examples of paintings in private ownership by Baltic German artists, such as Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz, Eduard Karl Franz von Gebhardt, and Johann Conrad Dorner.
