Women's Gazes at Museo Thyssen

In conjunction with the celebration of International Women’s Day and within the context of the Women’s Gazes Festival organised by MAV (Women in the Visual Arts), the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is presenting a programme of activities organised in collaboration with a number of women’s groups with whom the Department of Research and Further Studies has been working in recent years.

The aim of this activity is to analyse the representation of women and their lives through art. Saint Catherine of AlexandriaVenus and Cupid by Rubens and Girl at a Sewing Machine by Hopper are among the selected works. The four scheduled tours will take place on 8 March from 11am to 1pm and from 4pm to 6pm. Entry to the Permanent Collections is free all day.

The tour takes place on Thursday 8 March from 11am to 1pm or from 4pm to 6pm. Also on 8 March visitors can see a projection of Pilar the Lace-maker, a documentary video that recounts the life of Pilar Pastor, a woman with Parkinson’s disease who has been a lace-maker for many years. In this interesting documentary Pastor not only explains the technique in which she works but also unravels the secrets of various works in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, with a particular focus on the work of the 17th-century Dutch painter Nicolas de Maes. The film will be shown in the Auditorium from 1pm to 2pm and from 6pm to 7pm.

Women’s Gazes continues throughout March with talks on this selection of paintings given by members of the Museum’s education department. Tuesdays to Fridays, 1pm to 2pm.
