Spaniards visit an average of three exhibitions per year

Artelista presents the results of a survey on consumption of Art in 2011, the first held in Spain in this sector.

Spaniards visit an average of three exhibitions per year, buy gifts in the museum shops and acquire realistic paintings, landscapes and abstract Art below 1,500 euros. Those are the main findings of the survey on consumption of Art carried out by Artelista during the first semester of 2011. The study aims to define the profile of the users interested in the purchase and enjoyment of Art, examines their buying trends and analyzes their main hobbies and interests in the world of culture and entertainment.

According to the survey, the profile of the user who buys and enjoys Art is that of a middle-aged man between 35 and 54 years, university-educated who lives in an urban environment. His main hobbies are visiting museums, reading, the Internet, going to the theatre, movies and concerts and with a low interest in sports and television. Among the users who consume Art, 58% are men while 42% are women.

Despite the widespread crisis affecting the visual arts sector, the consumer profile in Spain is quite active: 20% of the Spanish consumers buy more than one painting per year and 90% of them buy paintings to decorate their home or place of work and as a present to family and friends. In addition, 70% of respondents prefer to buy originals and 30% are interested in prints. Regarding the purchase channels, direct contact with the artist remains the most used channel although an increasing percentage of users (8%) prefer online shopping. The study reveals that the museum shop is a pole of attraction for users, a must after visiting exhibitions. In fact, 3 out of 4 respondents spent at least 10 euros in souvenirs.
