Albrecht Dürer was the first German artist who already during his lifetime enjoyed wide recognition all over Europe. This is the first large exhibition, organized by The Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg, Germany), devoted to Dürer’s early art and the circumstances of the young painter’s life which enabled his unique work.
Dürer’s artistic development will be shown for the first time within the context of his time in order to extricate him from the aesthetic notion of the isolated genius.
Five exhibition sections take the visitor from biography and surroundings, through the core phenomena of the early work, to the question of Dürer’s role as archetype of the modern artist. Those section are the following:
Ideal Neighbors
Imitation and renewal
The dramatist
New Art?
The Dürer Lab
