From my studio: Héctor Jenz

For Hector Jenz, Concept Artist who draws and paints for business and pleasure, Leonardo da Vinci is his role model. Today he is the protagonist of the section From my studio.

1. When and why did you start painting?
Well, like many others of my generation, I started drawing scenes of Dragon Ball. But that was only one topic. The reality is that my mother self-taught oil painting, so I've always seen canvases and paintings at home. I have very similar concepts of light, volume and color thanks to it.

2. Which is your favourite time of the day to paint? How much time do you dedicate to painting?
The truth is that I like to paint at noon and at night. But I spend my time drawing at my work. Concept artist in a company that, among other things, is devoted videogames and my job is to give life to fictional worlds with a graphics tablet. When I get home I am not that eager to continue drawing. I prefer to go to the gym, see a series or movie, read or just call my friends to talk for a while.

3. Of all your paintings, which is your favourite one? Why?
I would say that the picture of Marisol on cardboard canvas. Four strokes and a couple of gradients with watercolor, but every time I go to my parents house I have a look at it. It has something to dazzle me... I drew it in a stroke of inspiration after watching an old movie starring the artist...

4. What are your sources of inspiration?
Everything, my surroundings. But lately I'm very influenced by the television series, movies and literature. A few months ago I saw the movie Grease and felt a stroke of inspiration. In two days I painted a picture of 150 x 50 of the protagonists of the film. Today is one of the works that I'm most proud of. But I'm not really a person who likes to draw by drawing. If I have time, as I said, I dedicate it to other matters. But if I have an artistic impulse, as with Grease, I get nervous So as a rule if that happens, I stop everything I'm doing and just start painting. Let's say that in these fleeting moments of inspiration is art that dominates my life.

5. If you could reincarnate in an great master of art, who would you like to be?
Leonardo Da Vinci without a doubt. He is my role model and in many aspects I look like him. I always plan everything ahead, I worry about the future and its sustainability, which can be achieved through art, creativity and innovation. Like the genius but to a lesser extent, I am multidisciplinary. I am passionate about drawing, but I love astronomy, metaphysics, philosophy, history, science... I try to surround myself with people  who can give new new knowledge through their experience.

6. Of all the artistic movements, which one influences you more?
The hyperrealism has always fascinated me. And also Expressionism. I am very influenced by them in my work. I always try to create hyper expressive nuances ... my art teacher always said I had a very interesting stylistic mix, but I think I should go deeper into it ... in fact I continue to do so throughout life, because every day there is something new and ideas and concepts mutate.

7. What is art for you? Which role does it play in your life?
Art in general gives me life, because I like to know more about the stars, the tropical plants or the extinct species, but to hear a song that inspires you an image, to watch an then write a poem... I think for that we must have a special sensibility. I like to think I have that "something" and try to use it transmitt an emotion or a feeling.
